Costa Rica and Sex

Costa Rica contains more than one type of natural and exotic beauty. Dramatic volcanic mountains, pristine rainforest canopies, and hot sandy beaches are only one side of the exotic wilds that Costa Rica has to offer. In Costa Rica, sex is the other tourist attraction that brings in a collective thousands of visitors a year.

Prostitution in Costa Rica is not illegal or legal, thus prostitution is openly accepted, while pimping or “proxenetismo” or “pimping” is strictly prohibited.

Sexual attitudes are liberal, and sex is seen as a natural part of life. Sexual crime rates are very low compared to the rest of Latin America, and for the most part in Costa Rica, sex crimes are committed inside the Costa Rican nuclear family unit.

Informal studies show that many Costa Rican women at one time or another have engaged in prostitution. “Arrangements” of a sexual nature between consenting adults, is not at all uncommon. Because of the open nature and legal availability of sex, and because of the freedom between adults to formulate arrangements, nearly any woman of moderate attraction will receive proposals regularly.

A polite proposal met with a polite decline is often received with polite acceptance.

Often visitor to the country will see billboards announcing (in English) that in Costa Rica sex with minors is strictly prohibited (under the age of 18) is enforced, and violators will be pursued and prosecuted. This may seem offensive to tourists who did not come to Costa Rica for sex with minors.

Between the natural beauty, the atmosphere of sexual freedom, and the availability of lovely and exotic sex workers in any corner of the country, it’s no wonder that Costa Rica has become the destination of not only the hardiest adventure travelers.
